THE INVESTIGATION OF THE PARAMETERS OF HEAD INJURY RELATED TO ACCELERATION AND DECELERATION.

Abstract

A mechanical system which accelerates the head without deforming it was constructed. The necessary instrumentation for the investigation has been integrated, experiment procedures specified and 13 preliminary experiments performed. The squirrel monkey has not been found to be the most ideal subject for our purposes but can be used for future head acceleration tests. A surprising result of the experiments thus far conducted is that the accelerations used have had less physiological consequence than was anticipated from the reports of other workers. This would indicate that factors other than accelerations of the magnitudes, waveshape and directions used here are contributory to concussion. (Author)
