A SYSTEMATIC METHOD FOR DETERMINING THE BEST ALTIMETER DISPLAY FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE AIRCRAFT.

Abstract

The methodology was implemented by conducting static and dynamic laboratory testing. The results of the testing were thoroughly analyzed and presented to the Air Force and the Navy. As a result, the Air Force and the Navy standardized upon the counter-drum-pointer altimeter display which should save approximately $20,000,000 in procurement, logistics, and maintenance costs. The display should also reduce the number of aircraft accidents caused by altimeter reading errors. The methodology was further refined and extended so that it can be utilized in future flight display developments and evaluations. (Author)
