CRITERIA FOR DESIGN OF A MICROBIOLOGICAL RESEARCH LABORATORY

Abstract

Efficient programming for the construction of infectious disease laboratory facilities requires (1) that a number of policy decisions be made, (2) that the types of isolation and containment features and equipment to be utilized be decided before design work begins, and (3) that the magnitude of the probable construction and maintenance costs be realized from the beginning. Major decisions derive from the fact that most laboratory infections occur at the laboratory bench and consequently that is where microbiological safety provisions should begin. As far as the safety of the employee is concerned, all other features are secondary in importance.
