SOUND VELOCITY MEASUREMENTS ON THE BLAKE PLATEAU.

Abstract

On Cruise 51 of R/V CHAIN in July and August 1965, twenty-eight sound velocity profiles were made, all within five miles of the Sea Spider buoy located at 30 deg 15 min N 78 deg 40 min W on the Blake Plateau. The majority of the profiles reveal a three-layer structure which is typical of Sargasso Sea water. However, between 27 July and 2 August, the structure changed to a single layer, typical of Gulf Stream water, and then changed back again. (Author)
