INVESTIGATION OF MAGNETIC RECORDING TAPE FOR HIGH RESOLUTION LONGITUDINAL RECORDING.

Abstract

Analysis indicated that the major differences between ordinary instrumentation tapes and wide band tapes were due to differences in tape usage indicated below: (a) Bias current setting was compromised to obtain improved frequency response at the expense of signal to noise ratio. (b) High speed operation increased static charge buildup and its associated deleterious effects such as attraction of dust and other particles, arcing, and mechanical drag. Static charge reduction in wide band recording is therefore essential. (c) High speed operation as well as use in critical recording applications necessitates good tape wear characteristics.
