ESTIMATION OF CAPACITY WITH BOUNDS FOR THE ERROR, I.

Abstract

It is known that for many types of solid figures the electrostatic capacity is equal to the value, at a suitable interior point of a related solid, of a function which is harmonic inside the second figure and attains specified values on its surface. To estimate this value, one attempts to approximate the desired harmonic function by a linear combination of known harmonic functions. If the linear combination is chosen so as to approximate closely the specified values on the surface, then it will approximate interior values at least as closely. The determination of a suitable linear combination can be reduced to a linear programming problem of a familiar type. In this preliminary report, the main features of the method are illustrated for the well studied problem of the capacity of a cube. (Author)
