A SUMMARY OF SOME DIGITAL SIMULATIONS RELATING TO RUNWAY UTILISATION.

Abstract

The report describes some idealised digital simulation models of runway utilisation, which have been studied at the Royal Aircraft Establishment over the past few years. A model is described first which demonstrates the benefit of a regular schedule under steady conditions, even with considerable unpunctuality. An extension of this is then described with a time-dependent arrival rate; two alternative queue disciplines are considered and two types of traffic schedule. The queue performance is obtained in each case for different values of traffic intensity and for different values of a parameter representing the quality of schedule-keeping. A brief description is given of the Atlas programme written for these simulations. (Author)
