MICROMECHANICS - FAILURE MECHANISM STUDIES.

Abstract

The objective of the program was to investigate the micromechanical behavior of a fiber reinforced composite under static tension, bending, shear loading, and also under fatigue loading. The approach used for the investigation was both analytical and experimental. Material models and composite specimens including various material combinations were observed under load, evaluated photoelastically, and tested to destruction. The reasons for fracture initiation and the mode of fracture propagation are suggested. The degree of correlation between analysis and experiments is determined. (Author)
