STUDIES OF PLASTIC WAVE PROPAGATION.

Abstract

The object was to find ways and means, experimental and analytical, of surmounting difficulties encountered in the analysis of longitudinal plastic wave propagation and, in the process, gaining a clearer understanding of the mechanics of plastic wave propagation in rods and bars. The greatest stumbling block in the path of further progress in plastic wave studies appears to be the lack of a constitutive relationship obtained without the necessity of prior assumptions regarding the nature of plastic wave propagation. The major effort in this investigation was devoted to the development of experimental techniques for providing data pertinent to the flow condition. These techniques, when developed, were used to obtain data from which a constitutive relationship was developed. (Author)
