BEAM/PLASMA INTERACTION WITH TRANSVERSE MODULATION.

Abstract

The paper presents computations for a finite beam in a finite plasma, indicating that the predicted growth rates for axisymmetric and transverse modulation are generally comparable, and describes some conclusive observations of growth in the transverse mode. Operation in this mode offers a possibility of overcoming the usual coupling difficulties of microwave beam/plasma amplifiers. A novel resonant coupling scheme being studied at Stanford is discussed.
