PROMPTING VS FEEDBACK IN TRAINING AUDITORY JUDGMENTS OF VARYING DIFFICULTY.

Abstract

Two training procedures were compared for their efficiency in training two auditory judgments. One procedure (prompting) involved presentation of the correct answer before the presentation of the stimulus. The other procedure (feedback) involved presentation of the correct answer after the subjects had judged the stimulus. Results indicate: (1) A substantial trend toward superiority of feedback in improving pitch discrimination performance at two levels of difficulty, (2) a trend toward superiority of prompting in the training of pitch and intensity identification, (3) a substantial trend toward greater transfer to a Doppler discrimination problem following auditory identification as opposed to auditory discrimination training. Recommendations are made concerning implications of the data for Navy training and future research. (Author)
