A LINEAR MOTION CHARACTERISTICS RECORDER.

Abstract

The recorder was designed to produce permanent records of the parameters of motion encountered in the study of basic psychological motor problems. The equipment provides a freely-moving stylus which may be directed by a psychological subject over a predetermined traverse. Simultaneous time-history records are produced of instantaneous displacement, velocity, and angular deviations of the stylus from the traverse. The paper reviews the engineering considerations involved in the selection and design of the signal-pickups and associated equipment. Engineering analyses and performance data are included. Of particular engineering interest are the theoretical analyses and experimental verification of an original velocity-pickup circuit employing a variable resistance element, and an amplification system based on the carrier principle, and making use of a pentagrid-converter 'modulator', for amplifying d-c signals. Also described is a novel circuit application of a standard commercial synchro as an angular pickup which results in simplified circuitry and improved sensitivity, response time, and reduced inertia.
