ON THE ROLE OF DIATOMIC AND PERIDYN ALGAES IN SELF PURIFICATION OF SEA WATERS.

Abstract

It was found that the Black Sea microscopic algae Prorocentrum micans, Gymnodinium najadeum and Thalassionema nitzschoides which are wide-spread in the plankton, considerably accelerated the destruction of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus in sea water, thus they promote auto-purification. At the same time, bethic forms of diatomic algae of the Black Sea - Actinocyclus ehrenbergi and Nitzschia closterium - do not produce an essential effect on the rate of necrosis of Escherichia coli and aurous Staphylococcus in sea water. Accumulations of substances, promoting the destruction of Escherichia coli, do not take place in the sea. These substances apparently, are continuously separated by algae in the process of their activity and are rapidly destroyed. (Author)
