HOT ELECTRON EMITTER.

Abstract

A review of the physics that underlies semiconductor-metal-semiconductor triode operation is presented. The topics treated are: metal-semiconductor Schottky barrier emitters and collectors, hot electron transport in metal films, and hot electron reflection at the collector barrier. A revised estimate of the maximum frequency of oscillation for the SMS triode is obtained and the high frequency capabilities of SMS triodes are compared with those of the bipolar transistor on a broader basis. Finally, the various attempts at fabricating an SMS triode at this Laboratory are described. (Author)
