THE PERIODONTAL STATUS OF INCOMING AIR FORCE ACADEMY CADETS.
Abstract
The study was carried out as the first phase of a long-term study to determine the relative effectiveness of various preventive measures. Three examiners evaluated and scored 713 incoming cadets at the United States Air Force Academy for gingival status, periodontal status, and the presence and extent of plaque and hard deposits. Gingival mean scores for the six segments ranged from 1.72 for the maxillary anterior area to 1.95 for the mandibular anterior area. The mandibular anterior segment also had the highest mean score for periodontal status and for hard deposits of any of the six segments scored. The highest plaque mean scores were recorded for the maxillary posterior segments. This study points out the presence of objective, documentable signs of periodontal disease in a highly selected group of young males. (Author)
