A STUDY OF SYSTEM RELIABILITY USING TOPOLOGICAL METHODS,

Abstract

This dissertation is primarily concerned with monotonic or coherent systems which operate whenever one or more subsets of their elements operate simultaneously. The algebraic structure of the system reliability function, R sub s, when written in terms of the variables representing the reliabilities of elements in the system, is investigated. In particular -- for systems having reliability models which can be represented by weighted linear graphs or nets, and for which the subsets of simultaneously operating elements correspond to paths between two nodes of the net -- a number of interesting relationships between R sub s and the topology of its corresponding net are proven.
