DEMODULATION OF ANGLE-MODULATED TELEMETRY SIGNALS. VOLUME I. ADVANCED DEMODULATION TECHNIQUES.

Abstract

A great deal of study has been given to the demodulation of FM and PM modulated signals. This report is the first of a two-volume series which reviews and contributes to the body of information on this subject. In this volume, three new techniques are discussed which are useful for the demodulation of angle-modulated signals. The three techniques analyzed are: (1) nonlinear post-detection filtering, (2) subharmonic phase-locked loop, and (3) feedforward deviation compression demodulator. The performance of these techniques is analyzed both with respect to noise effects and distortion. Emphasis is given to telemetry signal processing. Several computer (digital) programs were generated to carry out these investigations and nonlinear post-detection filters were simulated on an analog computer. In addition to the three new techniques studied in this report, several other topics are treated. One important topic is a precise analysis of the distortion in phase-locked loops. The second is a review of the effects of predetection recording on telemetry signals. (Author)
