DEMODULATION OF ANGLE-MODULATED TELEMETRY SIGNALS. VOLUME II. REVIEW OF DEMODULATION METHODS,

Abstract

The report presents a review of the various methods available for the demodulation of the angle-modulated sinusoids. Three major sections are contained in this report: Demodulation of Analog Angle-Modulated Signals (Conventional FM Discriminators) (Phase-Locked Demodulation), Special Feedback and Feedforward Demodulators for Analog Modulated Signals, and Digital Signalling. In Section 2 conventional discriminator detection is discussed along with various forms of phase-locked demodulation. These areas have received the greatest attention in the literature and consequently are given the greatestspace in this report. Section 3 describes a wide variety of special feedback and feedforward demodulation methods for angle-modulated signals. The frequency-feedback demodulator is considered here along with the numerous forms of 'modified' phase-locked loops. Feedforward demodulation methods are also discussed. Nonlinear post-detection filtering, described in greater detail in Vol. I (AD-639 787), is reviewed here for completeness. Various binary and M-ary methods of digital signalling are reviewed in Section 4. Optimum and near-optimum detection methods are described for: PCM-FM, FSK, PSK, DPSK, MPSK, M-ary coded PSK, and MFSK. (Author)
