KINETICS OF DECOMPOSITION OF AMMONIUM PERCHLORATE

Abstract

The decomposition of NH4ClO4 and of NH4ClO4-copper chromite mixtures has been studied by isothermal and adiabatic methods. Isothermal experiments resulted in identification of the reaction products and provided kinetic details. Adiabatic experiments provided a description of the rate of decomposition in a mathematical form adaptable to the analysis of combustion phenomena involving NH4ClO4. Reaction mechanisms for both uncatalyzed and catalyzed decomposition are proposed.
