THE NOTCH IMPACT TEST - DEVELOPMENT AND CRITICISM,
Abstract
After an investigation of the differences between the notch impact and the tension tests drop hammers, bend machines and other auxiliary devices, their defects and calibration as well as measuring procedures were discussed. The processes attending deformation and fracture were thoroughly investigated with emphasis being laid on the fundamental significance of the appearance of two kinds of fracture in steel. The reasons prohibiting the application of the law of similarity to the notch impact test were explained. Then followed discussions about the influence of temperature and specimen geometry on the notch impact work, with consideration of the two possible forms of break. After noting the facts so far known about the load deflection diagram in the notch impact test, the influence of the material, the structure, the chemical composition, heat treatment, hot and cold working, aging and temper brittleness were briefly discussed.
