SCANNING AND CLUSTERING: AN EXPLORATORY INVESTIGATION OF RETRIEVAL STRATEGIES IN FREE RECALL.

Abstract

Two retrieval strategies used by Ss in their recall of a categorizeable word list were identified and contrasted: clustering and scanning. Clustering consists of retrieving categories, and emptying them of the appropriate items. Scanning consists of searching through the ordered array of categories, retrieving one or two items per category, and cycling back through the array until all of the items of the list have been retrieved. It was found that, in terms of number of words correctly recalled, clustering was a more efficient strategy. (Author)
