FINITE-DIFFERENCE EXPERIMENTS WITH A SIMPLE CONSERVATION LAW.
Abstract
The authors applied a number of versions of the Lax-Wendroff scheme to obtain solutions of the finite-difference form of a simple conservation law. The principal results, deduced from a large number of numerical experiments, are that the stability of the solutions is highly correlated with the initial conditions, and that the use of a smoothing operator together with the Lax-Wendroff scheme gives the most satisfactory results.
