THE EFFECT OF THE FINITE WANTED PULSE WIDTH ON THE RADIO WAVE INTERACTION EXPERIMENTS,

Abstract

In the report the wave interaction equations are extended to take into account the finite width of the wanted pulse. The effect of the wanted pulse width upon the wave interaction experiment is then demonstrated through the use of this new equation by showing the effect that it has on the interaction coefficient height profile and by showing its importance in electron density synthesis. The significance of the effect of underlying ionization is demonstrated by evaluating the error that occurs in the synthesized electron density profile when it is neglected. It is also shown that the region of dominant heating plays an important role in determining whether underlying ionization can be neglected in synthesizing the electron density. A technique of obtaining the whole interaction coefficient height profile by making a simultaneous measurement of the fundamental frequency component of the repetitive disturbing pulses and a number of its harmonics is presented and a feasibility study of this technique is made. It is found that this technique can eliminate the long sweep time presently needed to make interaction measurements and could possibly allow data to be reasonably extrapolated to include below its present minimum height.
