ENGINEERING PROPERTIES OF MISSOURI RIVER FLOODPLAIN SOILS.
Abstract
Although alluvial floodplains constitute a relatively small portion of the United States, floodplain soils assume an exaggerated engineering significance because most inland cities are located along the banks of major rivers. Iowa is uniquely situated between two major rivers, the Mississippi on the east and the Missouri on the west. Because of the extent of the Missouri River floodplain and the availability of recent topographic maps, a portion of this floodplain adjacent to Iowa was selected for study. Deposits were systematically mapped, sampled and tested. The present report summarizes field and laboratory data from 88 samples from 41 borings. (Author)
