A RADIOCHEMICAL INVESTIGATION OF THE MECHANISM OF FORMATION OF CYANIDE FILMS ON STEEL COMPONENTS IN ALKALI-CYANIDE ELECTROPLATING BATHS.
Abstract
A radiochemical investigation is reported wherein adsorption isotherms are recorded for the formation of cyanide films on steel surfaces during cadmium plating operations in alkali-cyanide baths. It is shown that a unimolecular layer of cyanide is adsorbed from dilute solutions according to the equation for the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, whereas in more concentrated solutions multilayers of cyanide are adsorbed thru additional van der Waal forces. Additional experimental data are presented establishing that a chemisorption takes place with the formation of a thicker cyanide layer on the cathode when an electrical current is applied. (Author)
