AN EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF MIXING HIGH TEMPERATURE AIR WITH AMBIENT BYPASS AIR BY UPSTREAM INJECTION
Abstract
A mixing chamber employing upstream injection of the secondary airflow was designed and tested in conjunction with a Mach 4.0 nozzle. Mixing chamber configurations with total length to maximum diameter ratios of 1.7 and 2.3 were investigated. The mixer was designed for a secondary to primary mass flow ratio of 2.57 and a primary to stilling chamber pressure ratio of 4.78. A uniform temperature profile with not more than 5 percent variation at the exit of the Mach 4.0 nozzle was required. The mixing chamber was experimentally investigated at secondary to primary mass flow ratios of 0.86 to 2.70. The primary mass flow ranged from 0.99 to 1.5 lb/sec at temperatures from 1730 to 2240R, depending upon the heater flow rate. The secondary flow temperature was approximately 470R. Temperature and pressure profiles obtained in the mixing chamber and 0.5 in. downstream of the Mach 4.0 nozzle exit substantiated satisfactory mixer performance.
