DEVELOPMENT OF MINIATURE SMOKE SIGNAL PACKAGE FOR INCLUSION IN SURVIVAL KITS,

Abstract

A signal for burning on the ground was designed which produces a red smoke cloud that can be detected and recognized at a distance of about 6,500 feet and a height of 1000 feet. The signal weighs about 30 grams and is 1 1/4 inches in diameter by 1 1/4 inches high, which corresponds to a calculated volume of 1.5 cubic inches. Production of a colored cloud display at an altitude of 250 feet which is visible at a distance of 6,500 feet appears feasible for a signal having a diameter of about 1 1/4 inches and a height of 2 1/2 inches (volume of 3.1 cubic inches).
