SOLUTIONS OF THE HOMOGENEOUS DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS OF THE AXIALLY COMPRESSED CIRCULAR CYLINDRICAL SHELLS,

Abstract

Donnell's equations are used to study the deformations of a thin-walled, circular cylindrical shell simply supported at its two circular edges and subjected simultaneously to an axial compressive load and a line load distributed sinusoidally along a generator. The problem of instability does not arise as the magnitude of the axial compressive load is below its critical value. Explicit expressions are derived for displacements, membrane stresses, moment resultants and tranverse shear force resultants. The basic quantities useful in dealing with a practical problem or in considering a numerical example are tabulated and plotted. (Author)
