VARIATIONAL METHOD FOR UNSTEADY ONE-DIMENSIONAL PLASMA FLOW OF THE TYPE V PERPENDICULAR TO B,

Abstract

The well known variational principle of the plane steady gas-dynamical potential flow is generalized to unsteady plane MGD potential flow of the type v perpendicular to B. It is shown that the formulation of the variational principle in the independent variable p (pressure) is possible for arbitrary adiabatic exponent, but the formulation in the velocity potential is possible only for special values of the adiabatic exponent.
