STUDIES IN THE HALOGENATION OF ALIPHATIC COMPOUNDS.

Abstract

The chlorination of n-hexane was studied in the gas and liquid phases. The early qualitative work of Hass, McBee and their co-workers has been confirmed and quantitative data was obtained. The chlorination of 1,1,1-trifluoropentane in the gas phase was studied over a range of temperatures. The earlier work of Henne was confirmed and more quantitative data obtained. The bromination of 1,1,1-trifluoropentane was studied for the first time and the fluorination of the same compound has received a preliminary study. The chlorination of methyl butyl ether was studied but as yet the products have not been completely identified. The fluorination of carbon tetrachloride was investigated and the first experimental data on the absolute rate of a reaction involving fluorine atoms was obtained. (Author)
