POLYALKYLIDENE FORMATION.

Abstract

The results of an investigation on polyalkylidene formation from the catalyzed decomposition of diazoalkanes are reported. The kinetics of the formation of amorphous and crystalline polyethylidene from the gold catalyzed decomposition of diazoethane in six different solvents, as well as the kinetics of diazoethane decomposition was investigated. The dependence of the molecular weights of amorphous polyethylidene upon the reaction conditions was also studied. From the data obtained it is possible to discuss a probable mechanism for the reactions leading to amorphous and crystalline polyalkylidenes from the metal catalyzed decomposition of diazoalkanes. Some preliminary results from a research upon the melting process of crystalline polyethylidene are also reported. From these results, which require confirmation by other techniques, it appears that much probably changements of phase occur before of the melting of the polymers. (Author)
