THE EFFECT OF ADDED ELECTROLYTE ON THE E.S.R. AND OPTICAL ABSORPTION OF METAL-AMMONIA SOLUTIONS.

Abstract

Work performed under the grant is concerned primarily with the investigation of the fundamental nature of the solutions of alkali and alkaline earth metals in ammonia, amines and ethers. As a first approach to the problem, the effects of added electrolyte on the E.S.R. and optical absorption of the solutions is being studied. The first year's work was aimed at: reducing the experimental scatter, in an attempt to see definite cation and/or anion dependence, if any; obtaining some logical and consistent connection between the line splitting observed and the experimental variables (composition of sample; history of sample, i.e. ageing etc.; temp.); confirming, calibrating and explaining the melting phenomena.
