IMPROVEMENT OF LOW TEMPERATURE ENVIRONMENTAL TESTING CRITERIA AND PROCEDURES, PART 1.

Abstract

The report presents a new approach to the development of extreme low temperature environmental test criteria and procedures based on consideration of the interaction between the material and its environment which results in degradation of the reliability of the materiel. It proposes that each item of military materiel have, as part of its identification, its reliability in each of various Polar and Arctic environments. To facilitate this, a scale is proposed for rating the severity of low temperature environments. The program plans development of a usable scale of environmental severity, development of means for measuring values of this parameter, methods for correlating the effects of laboratory and of natural environments, and other activities needed to transform the proposed new environmental criteria into convenient form.
