AN ELECTROMECHANICAL ANALOG FOR AUTOPILOT-AERO-ELASTIC MISSILE STUDIES.
Abstract
An electromechanical analog of an autopilot and elastic missile in the pitch plane was developed. A purely electrical analog is employed in the conventional manner to simulate the autopilot and the rigid body in pitch. To this analog is connected, via an appropriate crossover network, a mechanical analog, a physical beam driven by shakers which represents the aeroelastic missile. The real-rate gyro mounted on the beam produces a signal to be fed back into the autopilot. A stability analysis of this system was performed for two basic cases. Reasonable agreement between theoretical and experimental gain margins was found. This concept of an analog combination, much like the woofer-tweeter type used in high fidelity systems, should be useful in future studies of missile autopilot-aeroelastic instabilities. (Author)
