A NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION OF RESIDUAL EQUATIONS.

Abstract

Solutions of many problems are concerned with a set of equations which are incompatible due to observational error and overdetermination. Proposed solutions are approximations and for such equations, one is confronted with a problem of selecting a criterion by which he may evaluate the approximate solutions. Often times several methods of solution are available. It is the purpose of this note to point out that the residuals found in any one such solution must be carefully analyzed and not be treated as an absolute criterion in the sense of being 'small' when the residuals are being examined in order to judge the result obtained by the solution.
