ON THE DETERMINATION OF THE ORIGIN OF THE STANDARD COORDINATES.

Abstract

The problem considered is rather specialized and minor when taken in its context of the Ballistic Research Laboratories work, but still might not be entirely devoid of some general interest. The problem is first stated for a primitive unidimensional case. Given are, on one hand, a series of azimuths (a's), taken from an arbitrary origin to a series of landmarks; and on the other hand, the horizontal distances (x's) to the images of these landmarks, measured from the center of the photograph; it may be assumed that the landmarks and the axis of the camera are confined to a horizontal plane. It is desired to devise a method of determining the azimuth of the optical axis of the camera; this method should extract the best information out of the available data, and should not be dependent upon the configuration of the landmarks.
