INVESTIGATION OF OROGRAPHIC EFFECTS ON PRECIPITATION PROCESSES.

Abstract

The report describes some of the instrumentation used during this project to make observations on oreigenic and other types of precipitation. Instrumentation described includes Radar Sets AN/CPS-9 and AN/TPS-10D and associated auxiliary equipment developed to facilitate the photographic recording of echo intensities. The auxiliary equipment includes automatic step gain controls, camera controls, CRT intensity measuring equipment, and the circuitry developed to synchronize the two radar sets which operate on the same frequency but at different PRF rates. Discussion and description of the following topics also appear in this report: equipment and techniques employed in cathoderay tube (CRT) photography; criteria used to determine the optimum settings of video gain, CRT brightness, and maximum usable receiver IF gain; the procedures followed in calibrating the radar receiver IF gain by recording on film the calibrated output signal from a radar test set.
