PRELIMINARY STUDY OF THE RETARDATION OF SHOCK WAVES IN DUST-LADEN AIR.

Abstract

A method is described for producing shock waves in normal air and in dust-laden air simultaneously in a shock tube. By comparing the position of the two waves at a particular time from shadowgraphs the retardation of the wave in the dust is obtained, although the mechanism of the retardation is not definitely determined. Computing the pressure decrease from the retardation it is found that the percentage decrease caused by the dust amounts to about 7% at 1 psi and reduces to less than 1% at 10 psi. (Author)
