COMPLEXING ACTION OF INORGANIC SOLVENTS.

Abstract

The physical properties and some of the chemical properties of pentafluorosulphur iminosulphur difluoride were examined. Hydrogen fluoride with tetrasulphur tetranitride forms thiotrithiazyl fluoride, while sulphur tetrafluoride reacts only slowly with tetrasulphur tetranitride, yielding thiazyl fluoride. Disulphur decafluoride fluorinates tetrasulphur tetranitride at elevated temperatures, forming thiazyl trifluoride in low yields together with some unidentified, though apparently novel, compounds. The reaction of ammonia with sulphur tetrafluoride was studied under a variety of conditions, and a method of obtaining tetrasulphur tetranitride in 70% yield from this reaction is given. Under certain conditions sulphur tetrafluoride and ammonia also form thiazyl fluoride in 10-20% yields. The reaction of ammonia with disulphur decafluoride was re-investigated and shown to give tetrasulphur tetranitride at ambient temperatures and thiazyl trifluoride at elevated temperatures. Preliminary work on the interaction of thiazyl fluoride with potassium cyanide and the reaction of sulphur tetrafluoride with ethylene diamine is also described, together with parallel work on other systems involving fluorine, nitrogen, and a sulphur element, and fluorine, nitrogen and boron or phosphorus.
