RESEARCH ON SPEECH COMMUNICATION AND AUTOMATIC SPEECH RECOGNITION.

Abstract

The report reviews four major areas of research. The first area is concerned with the theory of phonology which has included the development of physiological and acoustic phonetic theories, and work on a formal theory of phonemics. The second area is concerned with the linguistic interpretation of the speech wave. It is suggested that it is more realistic to attempt to interpret the speech wave types and the acoustical parameters of speech according to sets of phone types rather than directly as phonemes. The third area of investigation is concerned with the phonological description of languages, particularly Midwestern American English. Such a description includes a statement of the phonemes and their associated allophones, a statement of the phone type environments of the various allophones, and a statement of the allowable phoneme sequences. The forth area of investigation concerns lexical procedures in automatic speech recognition. The report includes summaries of recent publications under the grant and a bibliography of articles and reports which have been published by the Communication Sciences Laboratory under the sponsorship of the Directorate of Information Sciences.
