EXPENDABLE BATHYTHERMOGRAPH (XBT) SYSTEM EVALUATION FOR TACTICAL SONAR APPLICATION.

Abstract

The report summarizes the operational characteristics and capabilities of the surface ship launched expendable bathythermograph (XBT). To test the effectiveness of the new system, a critical examination was made of the accuracy and precision required of environmental ocean measurements for improved sonar range prediction purposes, and those requirements were then compared with the performance of the new XBT system. The analyses used to determine the XBT system performance are reported in detail and are applicable to expendable oceanographic instrumentation in general. (Author)
