POLYNUCLEAR HYDROXO COMPLEXES.

Abstract

A continuous flow system was built for studies on moderately fast reactions. Initially it was used in studies of the acid strength of (Co(NH3)5OD2)(+3) compared with (Co(ND3)5OD2)(+3) and (Co(NH3)5OH2)(+3). A normal isotope effect is observed, contrary to what has been reported in the literature. The flow system was then used in some preliminary studies of the condensation of the conjugate base (CH3)2SnOH(+) to yield a dimer. This condensation proved to be too rapid to study. Studies were initiated on organo platinum(IV) and gold(III) species in order to obtain less labile model compounds. Dimethylgold(III) hydroxide was identified as a tetramer both in the crystalline state and in non-coordinating solvents. Carbanion ligands were observed to exert a pronounced labilizing effect on the other ligands in the first coordination sphere of metal ions. Rates of water exchange were estimated for several aquo ions using oxygen-17 nmr. (Author)
