MEASURED INDEX OF REFRACTION OF AN ARGON PLASMA.

Abstract

The index of refraction for argon over a temperature range of 10,000K to 18,000K is measured at a wavelength of 6328A. A helium-neon laser is used as a light source for a Mach-Zehnder interferometer in these experiments. A commercially made plasma torch which was modified, was used to produce the plasma jet discharging into the atmosphere. The measured index of refraction lies between the curve representing the calculated ground state and free electron contributions and the curve representing the 'excited' electron as a free electron.
