Abstract

The report comprises an extensive review, integration, and critical analysis of the bulk of the non-experimental, research literature relating to the effects of the mass media of communication. Topics include: the nature of general effects of the media; functional orientation to media effects; uses of and gratifactions from the media; effects of media-portrayals of violence (here the experimental literature is examined in detail; role of interpersonal communication; effects of media on voting behavior.
