SATELLITE OBSERVED CLOUD IN SOUTHEAST ASIA.

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to develop techniques to assist the Army in mesoscale analysis and prediction, for both air and ground operations in Vietnam, through the application of satellite observations. The report describes the work leading up to the selection of a reliable sample of satellite pictures for use in latter study phases. A review of pertinent literature, concerning the climate and topography of Vietnam is followed by a description of the method used to extract useable data from satellite pictures. Satellite data extraction procedures were developed in a manner which leads to information compatible with conventional observations. When the satellite-observed cloud information was compared with conventional data, the representatives of the sample could be established. The effect of terrain on cloud production is shown by the different cloud distribution over homogeneous regions of Southeast Asia. The lack of a 'U' shaped cloud distribution, commonly found in the mid-latitudes, is also indicative of the strong terrain influence. (Author)
