THE OXYGEN-PEROXIDE COUPLE ON PLATINUM.

Abstract

As a part of an investigation of fuel cell materials at deep sea ambient conditions, the oxygen-peroxide couple was studied on bright platinum. The open circuit potential of platinum electrodes in alkaline electrolyte obeys the Nernst equation for the oxygen-peroxide couple at low concentrations of peroxide. The experimental potential 0.762 volt RHE is in close agreement with the theoretical value of 0.752 volt. At high concentrations of peroxide a mixed potential is formed which is nearly independent of the peroxide concentration but dependent upon the oxygen concentration. (Author)
