F- CENTER FORMATION BY UV IRRADIATION IN SEVERAL MIXED AND PURE ALKALI HALIDES, AND A STUDY OF THE IC1(-)VK(-) CENTER IN KC1 (I).

Abstract

The process of F-center formation by exciton uv irradiation has been studied in KC1(I), KBr(I), KI, and RbI. Experiments were performed principally in the mixed crystal KC1(I), a system which affords considerable experimental advantages for detailed studies. A selected number of experiments were carried out in the pure alkali iodides, KI and RbI, and the results show striking similarities with those obtained for KC1(I), indicating that the mechanism of defect formation in the mixed and pure crystal systems is closely analogous. This mechanism is considered to be a thermally activated decomposition of a relaxed excited state configuration of the I(-)ion, resulting in an intrinsic introduction of vacancy-interstitial pairs into the lattice, as evidenced by F and V-center growth.
