A Single-Impulse System for Generating Solitary, Undulating Surge, and Gravity Shock Waves in the Laboratory

Abstract

A piston type system was devised to create single-impulse wave for laboratory study. These include solitary waves, undulating surge and gravity shock waves. y sub 2/y sub 1 values as high as 4.0 were obtained, which for a still water depth (y sub 1) of 0.4' would result in a y sub 2/y sub 1 ratio of 1.6'. Details of design and construction are given. Calibration and comparison of observed vs. expected wave properties are discussed. Included are application of strobe flash and high speed motion picture techniques.
