THE CONSTRUCTION, CALIBRATION AND OPERATION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA EXPERIMENTS FOR OGO-I AND OGO-III.

Abstract

The report presents our final and best estimates of the response characteristics of the ionization chamber and electron spectrometer experiments flown on the OGO-I and OGO-III satellites. It should be recognized that the ionization chamber is a blind detector and, although remarkably sensitive and stable, cannot inherently distinguish different types of radiation. However, in many cases, the type of radiation can be identified by its time characteristics or by correlated measurements available from other satellite detectors or from ground based observations. The electron spectrometer is designed to give definitive measurements of the electron fluxes in the inner and outer zone and has performed well.
