APPROXIMATE CALCULATIONS OF ELASTIC-PLASTIC THIN SHELL THEORY,

Abstract

In this paper the energy method was employed to analyze the elastic-plastic deformation of thin sheels of linear hardening materials. The strain energy is calculated by using the method elastic energy together with a reduced plastic energy, and the problem becomes an elasticity problem together with an ideal plasticity problem. The problem of a circular cylindrical shell loaded symmetrically with respect to its axis was also calculated. Results are in agreement with those of A.A. Il'yushin. Utilizing this method, a considerably simpler calculation formula was obtained which describes the case of plastic deformation. Thus the calculation work is drastically reduced and the mechanical conception is also relatively easy to understand; hence, this method is easy to apply to other cases. (Author)
